The UK government has launched an AI tool named Extract, designed to enhance the efficiency of processing planning permission by significantly cutting down the time needed for document management. Traditionally, local councils have spent hours reviewing planning documents; however, Extract automates this process, reducing it to three minutes on average. This innovation is aimed at achieving the government's target of creating 1.5 million new homes while alleviating delays in planning, enabling staff to concentrate on decision-making rather than tedious paperwork. Initial trials have shown promising results in multiple councils, increasing overall productivity and service quality.
