A new initiative from Network Rail allows residents living within 500 meters of railway lines in England to receive real-time updates on engineering works and maintenance projects. Launched after a successful pilot in 2023, the scheme aims to improve communication with local communities about disruptions. Sarah Sanders, head of contact and community at Network Rail, emphasized the project's importance in enhancing neighbor engagement. The shift from physical letters to digital notifications will not only improve efficiency but also reduce costs significantly, making the system a win-win for both residents and the organization.
People living near mainline railways across England can now sign up for local area engineering works to let them know if their sleep or weekends might be disturbed.
We are working hard providing as much notice as possible about our projects, whether its general maintenance or engineering upgrades.
Our digital notification system is a step-change in the way we engage with our communities and neighbours as part of our vision to deliver a simpler, better, greener railway.
The scheme also saves Network Rail money, as they estimated it costed them £1.65 per letter sent out to local residents, vs the nearly free cost of sending out emails.
