Man who stabbed woman to death in frenzied attack at London bus stop is given hospital order
"Several members of the public allegedly saw Debella carry out the senseless attack on May 9 2024 before "casually walking away", the court heard. He was arrested within hours of Ms Mukey's death and detectives built a case using CCTV, DNA and evidence from his internet use. Met Police said Debella had an interest in violence, trawling the internet before and after the killing for violent videos, as well as news articles about the stabbing."
"Many of us know what it means to have a mother who is the heart of the family. That was true for us, they said. "We are grateful that today's proceedings have now concluded, and we would like to thank the Metropolitan Police and the Crown Prosecution Service for their work throughout this process.""
"Debella received an indefinite hospital order today and could be re-tried in future if doctors deem him fit enough to stand trial."
Jala Debella, 25, bought a hunting knife online and stabbed 66-year-old Anita Mukhey up to 18 times at an Edgware bus stop, leaving her for dead. Several members of the public reportedly saw the attack and Debella allegedly 'casually walk away' before his arrest within hours. Police built a case using CCTV, DNA and his internet history, which showed an interest in violent content. Debella, who lived in a rehabilitation home and was known to mental health services, was deemed unfit to stand trial; a trial of fact found him responsible and he received an indefinite hospital order. Mukhey's family described her as the heart of their family and thanked police and prosecutors.
