The illegal felling of a 300-year-old Pedunculate oak tree in Enfield's Whitewebbs Wood has incited outrage among residents and conservationists. Following reports on April 3, an investigation has been launched, with local authorities expressing shock and sadness over the loss. Lawrence-Thor Stephen, a tree care expert, described the tree as a "National Treasure." Enfield Council has emphasized their commitment to protecting local green spaces, placing a Tree Preservation Order on the site and working closely with police to identify the perpetrator. Councillors have also raised concerns about the lack of prior protection for the tree.
This is a deeply concerning development. The tree that was felled is of real significance and its loss is enormously distressing.
Enfield Council cares deeply about protecting trees and green spaces in the borough. We were recently made aware of the felling of an ancient oak tree.
