"Kensington and Chelsea Council has written to 100,000 households warning their personal details may have been taken in a recent cyber attack. The town hall urged residents to follow National Cyber Security Centre advice and warned criminals could use the information to make scams seem more legitimate, according to an update on its website. The council said the attack was carried out "with criminal intent""
"They said small samples of the data accessed by hackers show some of it is likely to contain sensitive data and personal information. "It is possible that any data copied and taken from us could be misused or published. We are planning accordingly for this, working with law enforcement at every step," the update read. The council said its cybersecurity team detected and contained the attack "quickly" and they don't believe hackers accessed third-party systems that help provide services and store data."
Kensington and Chelsea Council has written to 100,000 households warning personal details may have been taken in a recent cyber attack. Residents are urged to follow National Cyber Security Centre guidance and to be wary of unexpected calls, messages, links, attachments or anyone requesting sensitive information. Small samples of accessed data suggest some records contain sensitive personal information that could be misused or published, and checks will prioritise files for vulnerable individuals. The cybersecurity team detected and contained the attack quickly, does not believe third-party systems were accessed, and is working with neighbouring councils, law enforcement and the NCSC to track data; full checks could take months.
