Journalists around the globe are increasingly facing unjust imprisonment for performing their duties. One Free Press, a coalition of news organizations, compiles an annual list identifying the "10 most urgent" cases. This year, Jimmy Lai, the founder of the pro-democracy newspaper Apple Daily, is at the forefront, enduring solitary confinement in Hong Kong. The report cites a rise in imprisoned journalists, including 361 worldwide as of late 2024. As some journalists are released, the ongoing struggle highlights the urgency of fighting for their freedom and recognizing their human stories.

We must treat them as the heroes they are and never stop fighting for their release.
