Kate O'Connor, a 24-year-old athlete from Dundalk, achieved a historic third place in the women's pentathlon at the European Athletics Indoor Championships 2025. This accomplishment made her the first Irish athlete to earn a medal in multi-events at a senior championship. Coached by her father Michael and Tom Reynolds, O'Connor's performance was described as world class. Her father expressed pride, remarking on the incredible excitement of witnessing her race, particularly her remarkable performance in the 800 meters. He emphasized the importance of nurturing current athletes for their future success in athletics.
It was absolutely incredible. And just to sit in the stadium as a fan and watch her do what she did yesterday was just unbelievable. I'm pinching myself.
Every performance that she put in in her event was absolutely and utterly world class. She went into the 800, and the Kate O'Connor magic happened.
We're just living in a special, special time. We've got a few world-class athletes in our hands at the moment, and their development over the next four years is going to be absolutely crucial.
