Holiday warning as mosquito bite leaves student paralysed for a month
Briefly

Lucy Slawson's holiday in Turkey turned into a medical nightmare after a mosquito bite led to severe swelling and a rash. Initially dismissing her symptoms as sunburn and overindulgence, she experienced vision loss on the drive home and had to be hospitalized. After slipping into a semi-comatose state, she was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Functional Neurological Disorder, attributed to an immune response triggered by the bite. Lucy spent a month in the hospital relearning basic functions, highlighting the severity of unexpected travel illnesses.
It was really red so I thought 'oh I've just got sunburn'. I was very swollen. I had literally tripled in size that holiday.
Lucy pulled into a hotel in Sheffield and checked in to rest. But when she woke up four hours later her rash was burning and her legs had turned blue.
Doctors diagnosed Lucy with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Functional Neurological Disorder and believed this to have been triggered by an immune response to the bug bite.
