New data reveals that 40% of prisoners who died by suicide in the UK were denied adequate healthcare prior to their deaths, exposing systemic neglect in overcrowded facilities. An investigation by the Prison and Probation Ombudsman (PPO) highlighted that many had not received the same standard of care legally required. Chair of the justice committee, Andy Slaughter, stated there is a failure to support these individuals, while chief inspector Charlie Taylor cautioned that without immediate improvements, more deaths could occur. The case of Jason Lee McQuoid exemplifies the dangerous consequences of neglect, where he pleaded for help but was ignored before his tragic death.
We see it frequently in prisons that we inspect that there are people in prisons who just aren't getting the support that they need, he told The Independent.
In each case a clinical reviewer assessed whether the care was equivalent to what they would expect outside of jail as part of investigations into the deaths.
