Investigators have confirmed that remains found in a grave in Annyalla, Co Monaghan, do not belong to the plot owner's family or any of the Disappeared victims from the Troubles. The Independent Commission for the Location of Victims' Remains is working alongside An Garda Siochana, which has initiated an identification process after exhuming the remains on November 26, 2024. The grave was opened due to suspicions of historical activity from the 1970s, particularly regarding Mr. Lynskey, a known Disappeared individual allegedly buried there.
An Garda Siochana is now attempting to identify the remains. A spokesman said, 'An Garda Siochana has notified the local coroner, and commenced enquiries to assist the local coroner.'
The commission opened the grave in November last year after it received information related to 'suspicious' historical activity during the 1970s at a grave in Annyalla cemetery.
The ICLVR confirmed that the remains were not those of any of the three other Disappeared victims murdered and secretly buried by republican paramilitaries during the Troubles.
Mr Lynskey was abducted, murdered and secretly buried by members of the republican paramilitary group in 1972; he is one of 17 people who were Disappeared.
