Driver doing 175kmh on Louth motorway has two-year disqualification removed on appeal
A 46-year-old man was convicted of dangerous driving after being detected travelling at 175km/h on the M1 near Drumleck, Castlebellingham, on February 4, 2026. He was driving an Audi A6 in wet conditions with heavy traffic and told gardaí he was on the way to help a friend. He admitted the offence and sought a reduction of the charge to careless driving. He said he was afraid of being late and had no previous convictions, living in the country for 20 years and driving for a delivery company as a team leader. The court accepted that he should be given one chance, convicted him of careless driving, fined him €1,000, and removed the disqualification.
"A garda sergeant explained that once someone is detected travelling over 150kmh on the motorway (speed limit 120kmh), they are arrested for dangerous driving. The judge said that she believed Mr Janiak should be given one chance. He was convicted of the lesser charge of careless driving and fined €1,000. The disqualification was removed."
