Columbia protester Mahmoud Khalil challenges arrest in US immigration court
Briefly

Mahmoud Khalil, a pro-Palestine protest leader, is contesting his deportation under the Trump administration, citing egregious misconduct during his arrest. His attorney, Mark Van Der Hout, argued for the case to be dismissed due to a lack of a warrant and claims that Khalil posed a flight risk. This hearing is significant as it follows successful challenges by other students targeted for their pro-Palestine advocacy. Despite pursuing a federal case in New Jersey, Khalil remains detained in Louisiana, as his legal team alleges efforts by the administration to expedite immigration proceedings and suppress their federal challenge.
When there are egregious violations, the case should be thrown out, and that's what we've asked the immigration judge to do, Mark Van Der Hout, a lawyer representing Khalil, told reporters.
The violations in question, Van Der Hout said, include the lack of a warrant at the time of the arrest and claims that Khalil proved to be a flight risk.
This hearing could be the most consequential turn yet in a series of cases in which US students have challenged being targeted by the Trump administration.
Lawyers for the students say their rights, including freedom of speech, have been violated by the Trump administration.
