Co-op admits blocking rivals from opening shops near one of its Romford stores
Briefly

The Co-op's Dagenham Road store is among nearly 100 locations flagged by the UK competition authority for violating the Groceries Market Investigation (Controlled Land) Order 2010. This rule prohibits supermarkets from hindering competitors' access to land nearby to enhance consumer choice and lower prices. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) noted existing agreements restricting rival store openings. Co-op has already addressed most breaches but has unresolved agreements. The CMA emphasizes the importance of fair competition, and Co-op acknowledges the disappointment surrounding these findings, committing to corrective action.
Daniel Turnbull, senior director of markets at the CMA, said: 'Restrictive agreements by our leading retailers affect competition between supermarkets and impact shoppers trying to get the best deals.' He noted, 'We know that Co-op has made a considerable effort to amend all their unlawful agreements...'.
Co-op's spokesperson stated, 'As a business that is committed to operating fairly, we recognise this is extremely disappointing. This is a matter we take very seriously...'
The Co-op has addressed 104 of its agreements claimed to breach the 2010 order, confirming its commitment to rectify practices that limit competition.
According to the CMA, restrictive covenants at Co-op's Dagenham Road store hindered rival retailers, ultimately restricting consumer choices and price competition in the vicinity.
