This decision has sparked outrage among Chagossians, who were forcibly displaced in the 1960s and 1970s. Two Chagossian women, Bernadette Dugasse and Bertrice Pompe, plan to take legal action against the UK government, arguing they were excluded from discussions regarding their homeland. The deal has faced challenges, particularly from US concerns about national security affecting the military operations based out of Diego Garcia, complicating the situation further.
Chagossians were removed from their place of birth, without their consultation, and have been treated badly for 60 years.
Since then we have been struggling to understand why we have been treated so poorly by the British government. I want to stay British and I also want the right to return to the Chagos Islands.
