Dozens of firefighters responded to a blaze on York Street, a popular London dining street, forcing the road to be cordoned off shortly before 11am during a nearby 60s Day event. Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters from Twickenham, Richmond, Heston and surrounding stations attended. The fire is believed to have started accidentally in the building's ducting system. While searching for potential victims, officers discovered several cannabis plants in the same building. Investigations indicate the cannabis factory was not linked to the fire's origin. London Fire Brigade warned that drug farms present heightened risks due to unsafe wiring, loft locations and potential traps. No arrests have been made and police enquiries continue; anyone with information was asked to call 101, quoting CAD 2749/17Aug.
"searching the scene for potential victims, London Fire Brigade officers discovered several cannabis plants in the same building"
"They're often in top floors or lofts which means when a fire takes hold it spreads, destroying roofs and damaging neighbouring buildings,"
"Firefighters can also be exposed to risks when dealing with the fires because of bad wiring and traps at some of the properties."
"It's important that people know the key signs and inform the police so that they can act swiftly to prevent this type of dangerous fire happening."
