Ryan Castellucci, a non-binary US citizen living in the UK, has lost their legal bid to have their gender identity recognized after applying for a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC) under the Gender Recognition Act. Although California recognized Castellucci's gender identity, the UK removed California from the approved list for GRC applications shortly before Castellucci's application. The High Court and Court of Appeal ruled against Castellucci, stating that the current law does not recognize non-binary identities. Castellucci plans to appeal to the Supreme Court for further legal recognition.
