"After watching my 98-year-old grandmother live life to the fullest, I now see aging as a gift. She has lived through several challenges, yet she has always managed to keep a smile on her face. I believe her humility and positive outlook on life are what have kept her going all these years. In 2019, I lived in Washington, DC, and my Grandma Lenora lived in Minnesota."
"She was having a lot of neck pain, and it was hard for her to find any sort of relief. I asked her how she always had such a good attitude, and she said, "Being grumpy doesn't help anyone. I'm not happy about what's going on, but it is what it is, and it makes others happier when you're not grumpy too." Her sunny perspective truly sank in when I started to think about everything she had gone through in her life."
"I call her the original travel influencer My grandma has always grabbed life by the horns and made the most of every opportunity. I always like to say she was the original influencer because she has this photo from a trip to Italy in the 80s that is reminiscent of the way travel creators often pose for photos now. Even with my grandpa's mobility challenges, they went to places like Egypt, Israel, Norway, Sweden, Italy, and the Netherlands well into their retirement years."
Grandma Lenora reached 98 while maintaining humility and a positive outlook and embracing aging as a gift. She endured major hardships including the loss of a daughter to preterm birth, a husband disabled by a farming accident, giving up nursing school to support the family farm, and later losing her husband after more than fifty years of marriage. She managed chronic neck pain while emphasizing that being grumpy helps nobody and acceptance benefits others. She and her husband traveled widely in retirement to countries such as Egypt, Israel, Norway, Sweden, Italy, and the Netherlands. Her adventurous spirit inspired travel in younger generations.
