About a quarter of the approximately 1,200 groves sponsored through the league are designated as memorial groves, dedicated posthumously for individuals, grandparents, veterans and others.
According to Jackie Perkins, most dedications in recent years have been by families, and it's very-much-still-alive individuals selecting their own groves and wanting to connect with the forest.
Since the early 20th century, organizations like the Save the Redwoods League have relied on donations from deep-pocketed individuals to choose official names of trees and groves.
