"The runoff is finding its way into Sonoma Creek, causing it to swell. Additionally, the tides are much higher," Caltrans spokesperson Jeff Weiss stated, highlighting the combination of high tides and heavy rainfall that contributes to the flooding issue. He emphasized that the interplay between runoff and tides creates a challenging situation for drainage in the area.
"Given that we're having high tides and a lot of rain fell last night in the early morning hours, it's hard to tell how quickly the water will go down," Weiss mentioned, reflecting the unpredictability of the flooding situation and the potential impact on reopening roadways.
Weiss indicated that the area typically reopens within 10 to 36 hours if weather conditions improve. However, previous closures due to atmospheric rivers and problematic rain suggest this region frequently faces such flooding challenges.
