A new campaign, One Mississauga, has been launched to confront racism and discrimination in Mississauga, a city facing a rise in hate crimes. Local councillor Dipika Damerla highlighted the global consequences of local tensions. The campaign features engaging posters showcasing various instances of discrimination and responses that foster curiosity and connection among residents. Complaints of hate-motivated crimes increased significantly, and the campaign is described as a call to action for everyone to work collaboratively towards a unified community, acknowledging the importance of dialogue and mutual understanding to combat biases and hatred.
"Mississauga is a global city, and so every time there's global conflicts, it sort of has impacts here," said local councillor Dipika Damerla, chair of the city's committee combating racism, discrimination and hatred.
"It's really important to remember that no matter who we are, we all have biases," she said, emphasizing the need for self-reflection in the fight against discrimination.
"We need to open up dialogue, and I hope that that would happen within the city," said Angela Carter, calling for understanding and assistance among residents.
