Alexis Ohanian, co-founder of Reddit and partner at Seven Seven Six, has joined billionaire Frank McCourt's bid to acquire TikTok, contributing his social media expertise. Ohanian's background includes founding Reddit and investing in various startups, including efforts to promote women's sports. McCourt leads an initiative titled Project Liberty, involving a consortium called The People's Bid, with other notable suitors like Microsoft and Oracle. His involvement aims to utilize his experience in social media to enhance the acquisition's feasibility and engagement strategy.
"Where he can help mostly is validating but also socializing what we're doing," McCourt told Reuters about bringing on Ohanian. "On the one hand, this is a project which has very sophisticated technology at the core, and so you're dealing with a very specific audience when it comes to demonstrating the validity of that technology and in how it works, and why it's needed to engage users effectively."
Ohanian has also played a prominent role in advancing the world of women's professional sports, becoming a founding investor in the Los Angeles NWSL team Angel City FC in 2020. His initiatives strive to highlight the significance of women's contributions in various fields.
Through his venture firm, Ohanian has invested in startups ranging from MrBeast's snack brand Feastables to the reusable rocket firm Stoke Space. His diverse investments underscore a commitment to innovative companies reshaping their industries.
Ohanian did not respond to a request for comment, which suggests that while he is taking on a strategic role, he prefers to keep details of his involvement discreet until confirmed.
