Work to replace parts of 470,000 failing water meters in homes and businesses across Toronto is underway, with taxpayers facing millions in costs as problems worsen.
Thousands of radio transmitters on water meters are failing ahead of schedule, meaning the meters can’t relay usage data to the city, resulting in estimated billing.
The general manager of Toronto Water noted that while the meters are still functioning, transmission failures are causing unexpected charges due to lack of real-time usage data.
The small lithium batteries in the transmission units, initially expected to last 20 years, are failing after 11 or 12, complicating the replacement effort.
