Premier Doug Ford announced new legislation in Ontario to speed up WSIB benefits access for firefighters diagnosed with kidney and colorectal cancers, acknowledging their higher risk.
Ford emphasized, "Just as people rely on our first responders, our government wants to make sure our heroes on the front line are taken care of as well," highlighting the urgent need for supportive measures.
Ontario Professional Firefighters Association president Greg Horton stated that cancer accounts for 74% of all line of duty deaths in firefighting, underlining a significant occupational hazard.
Firefighters have a cancer death rate about four times higher than the general population, with the World Health Organization designating the job as a Group 1 carcinogen.
