A power outage struck downtown Toronto on Wednesday, affecting areas between Queen Street and the Gardiner Expressway, and between Bathurst and Yonge Streets. The outage began around 1:30 p.m., with power anticipated to be restored by 5:30 p.m. Toronto Hydro confirmed crews were working to find and rectify the issue. Despite the outage, TTC services remain unaffected. OCAD University and CBC Toronto experienced building closures, while Mirvish Productions had to cancel a matinee performance of The Lion King shortly after it began, due to power loss during the show.
"Our crews are on-site at John Transmission Station investigating the cause and we're working together to restore power as safely and quickly as possible," Hydro One said in a post on X.
"Right now we are contacting all audience members affected and arranging for them to see a future performance of the show at their convenience," he said.
