Parliament Street in Dublin has transitioned to a pedestrian and cycling-only zone, receiving widespread support. The area between Essex Quay and Essex Gate is now free of vehicles, allowing for a safer and more enjoyable experience for pedestrians. Local businesses expect increased customer traffic, with various stalls and activities enhancing the vibrant atmosphere. Businesses and pedestrians report positive feedback about the new environment, noting its continental feel and potential for increased safety. The change is part of an initiative to promote walking and cycling, supported by the Dublin City Council.
Francis Leavy, artist and owner of Fab Cow, expressed optimism about the pedestrianisation boosting local business, stating, "I hope this will bring more people to the centre of town." He also acknowledged the potential for increased foot traffic with proper public transport infrastructure.
Rachel Coffey remarked on the positive impact of pedestrianisation, saying, "It's lovely, less traffic, you can meander the street now. It has quite a continental feel. I think it will make the city a lot safer.”
Martin Hart, CEO of the Temple Bar Company, shared his enthusiasm about the vibrant atmosphere of the pedestrianized area, noting, "It's lovely to stand in the middle of Parliament Street in front of City Hall on a Friday afternoon in July and take in the city.”
