"People in the area, they learn there's a speed trap, they slow down. But how about people that are going through the community?"
"They've taken hundreds and hundreds of millions of dollars out of taxpayers' pockets."
"has been proven to reduce speeding, change driver behaviour, and make our roads safer for everyone drivers, cyclists, pedestrians, and especially children and other vulnerable road users."
Ontario Premier Doug Ford will make an announcement expected to address the future use of speed cameras in the province. Ford has labeled speed cameras an ineffective "tax grab," praised Vaughan for removing them, and warned he would act if municipalities do not. Multiple cameras were vandalized in Toronto, with three damaged last week and 20 tampering incidents reported in one week. Ford argued cameras produce localized slowdowns and have extracted hundreds of millions from taxpayers, and promoted alternatives such as flashing lights, signage, roundabouts and speed bumps. Police and municipal groups maintain evidence shows automated speed enforcement reduces speeding and improves safety.
