"walked away from the [negotiation] table"
"If they think they can neglect their responsibility to bargain, it's time we remind them there is power in the union,"
"This is not just a fight for a contract it's about the future of student support. We're fighting because we know our students need us."
Over 10,000 full-time support workers at Ontario's 24 public colleges will begin a strike Thursday to press for job security and funding protections. OPSEU represents librarians, bookstore and registrar employees and has been negotiating contracts with the College Employer Council since June; contracts expired Sept. 1. The union cites the CEC's failure to respond and says the employer "walked away from the [negotiation] table," prompting the strike. OPSEU estimates system-wide cuts will eliminate about 10,000 jobs and cancel over 650 programs. More than 55 community groups have pledged support, and picket lines will disrupt essential college services.
