"It's disrupting our whole lives. It's absolutely disgraceful," said Heather Bator, reflecting the frustration of residents affected by the reinstated train whistles following safety concerns.
Shanta Sundarason, a long-time campaigner against train whistles, expressed, "I get the safety aspect of it, but at the end of the day, why do the residents have to suffer for the sake of the folly of one person?"
Local councillor Reid McAlpine explained that the reinstatement of whistles was due to a safety incident involving a street sweeper, which has now ignited resident outrage.
The city of Markham previously worked to silence train horns through a $7.5 million anti-whistling program, successfully stopping horns at 15 crossings before this recent change.
