An overnight fire destroyed six townhomes under construction in Toronto's Yorkville area, causing widespread damage to adjacent structures. Fire crews responded to the scene early Wednesday morning, discovering heavy flames and smoke. Acting Deputy Fire Chief Steve Darling reported that not only were the townhomes fully engulfed, but several neighboring buildings were also adversely affected, with blown-out windows and damaged vehicles noted. No injuries were reported, but Darling warned of substantial monetary losses and confirmed that the Ontario Fire Marshal is looking into the fire's cause, with firefighters expected to remain on-site through Thursday.
The townhomes were engulfed in flames, and several adjacent buildings were also badly damaged, said Steve Darling, acting deputy fire chief.
The radiant heat from the blaze also blew out windows on buildings across the street and damaged nearby vehicles, Darling added.
Darling estimated that two to three other structures will need to be completely renovated. 'There's going to be a significant dollar-value loss,' he added.
The Ontario Fire Marshal is investigating the origin of the blaze, and Darling said he expects Toronto firefighters to be on the scene until Thursday.
