"Sure enough, a sobbing Trevor soon calls, needing $50,000 to pay a kidnapper's ransom, otherwise he will be killed. Paula puts down the phone and returns to negotiating instead with her husband Karl (Jake Johnson) for better access to Hazel and trying to dissuade him from moving to Idaho with her and his girlfriend, Mallory (Jessy Hodges), for a new job. Then Trevor calls her at work on a number she never shared with him and the tone changes. We know everything, an apparent accomplice tells her. She is to pay up or they will destroy her life."
Trevor, a handsome therapist-with-benefits, is used by newly divorced mother Paula when she is alone at home. After signs of instability, a masked man attacks Trevor and delivers a cryptic message to Paula. Paula films the assault and reports it to police, who warn it is likely a scam rather than a real crime. Trevor later calls in distress, claiming he needs $50,000 for a ransom or he will be killed. Paula hangs up and focuses on negotiating custody access with her husband Karl while trying to prevent a move to Idaho. Trevor then calls from a number she never shared, and the tone shifts to threats. An accomplice claims they know everything and demands payment or they will destroy her life.
