HBO's Next Big Video Game Adaptation Is a Continuation of 'Baldur's Gate 3'
"Reported by on February 6, Craig Mazin is at the helm of a new show based on Baldur's Gate 3, a fantasy role-playing video game (and the third in a series) heavily based on the tabletop game Dungeons & Dragons. Joining Mazin are executive producers Jacqueline Leso and Cecil O'Connor, along with Gabriel Marano from Hasbro. Chris Perkins, the former Head of Story at D&D publisher Wizards of the Coast (a Hasbro subsidiary) and currently working for Critical Role's Darrington Press, will serve as a creative consultant."
"I am a devoted fan of D&D and the brilliant way that Swen Vincke and his gifted team adapted it. I can't wait to help bring Baldur's Gate and all of its incredible characters to life with as much respect and love as we can, and I'm deeply grateful to Gabe Marano and his team at Hasbro for entrusting me with this incredibly important property."
HBO will produce a television series adaptation of Baldur's Gate 3, with Craig Mazin serving as showrunner and executive producers Jacqueline Leso, Cecil O'Connor, and Gabriel Marano attached. Chris Perkins will act as a creative consultant. The series is confirmed to take place immediately after the events of the game. Casting has not begun and few details are available. The game’s open-ended structure and multiple possible endings create narrative challenges for a linear series, since player choices, character deaths, and varied outcomes produce dozens of divergent conclusions. Mazin has expressed extensive personal enthusiasm and investment in the franchise.
