James Van Der Beek died aged 48 after a battle with bowel cancer. He is survived by his wife, Kimberly, and six children: Olivia, Joshua, Annabel, Emilia, Gwendolyn and Jeremiah. Kimberly published a GoFundMe link to help cover expenses related to his extended medical treatment. The fundraiser states medical care costs left the family out of funds and that donations will help keep the family in their home and support the children's education and stability. The campaign surpassed an initial $500,000 target within hours, rose to $700,000 after donations from more than 7,000 individuals, and was later set at $1m. Van Der Beek had previously auctioned Varsity Blues memorabilia to help with treatment costs.
