"YouTube TV subscribers couldn't watch ESPN's "Monday Night Football" on the platform this week. YouTube TV and Disney can't agree on what the TV service should pay for the latter's channels. Even the draw of the Dallas Cowboys game wasn't enough for the companies to make a deal. How popular are the Dallas Cowboys? Not popular enough to convince YouTube TV to pay up for Disney's TV networks, including ESPN, apparently."
"Disney and ESPN have made several attempts to get viewers on their side. The Mouse House set up a website sharing its side of the story, complete with tools for YouTube TV subscribers to express their frustration with Google. ESPN broadcast its flagship college football show "College GameDay" for free on the ESPN app and X. The sports network also recruited some of its top personalities, who spread the word about the YouTube TV blackout dispute on social media."
Roughly 10 million YouTube TV subscribers were unable to watch ESPN's Monday Night Football because Disney's channels remain blacked out on the platform. The stalemate centers on carriage fees, with Disney seeking what it calls market rates and YouTube TV arguing that such fees would force another price increase for subscribers. Google said it would refund YouTube TV subscribers $20 if the blackout lasts for an "extended period of time," without defining the threshold. Disney and ESPN have used a website, free broadcasts of College GameDay on the ESPN app and X, and on-air personalities to rally viewers. Negotiations remain unresolved.
