As post-pandemic realities collide with economic pressures and political dynamics, tech culture is undergoing significant changes. Big Tech firms and startups alike are now prioritizing efficiency and output over employee perks. Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke, known for advocating work-life balance, has recently adjusted his stance, highlighting a shift towards longer working hours. This trend is mirrored across the industry, as layoffs have become commonplace and a competitive race in AI intensifies performance expectations, leading to a more demanding atmosphere for employees in tech.
Across tech, the tables have turned for employees as performance pressure and proclamations of 'efficiency' and 'intensity' replace perks and pampering.
Even Lütke appeared to change his tune. 'I'm at home for dinner but I work at least 10 or so hours a day and a lot of the weekend.'
With sweeping layoffs becoming the norm, the pressure to dominate in AI has created intense competition, leading to harder work environments for tech employees.
Meta said earlier this year it was cutting 4,000 employees deemed low-performers.
