Two major Swedish game companies, Massive Entertainment and Sharkmob, are spearheading an initiative to establish a collective bargaining agreement tailored specifically for the gaming industry. The move, endorsed by Massive's CEO Thomas Andren, aims to address the absence of industry-specific agreements, despite over 90% of Sweden's workforce being covered by some form of agreement. Andren noted that many employees and unions have long called for such an agreement, emphasizing the need for a competitive environment in the global gaming market. The initiative reflects the industry's growing significance as a major cultural export for Sweden.
Thomas Andren stated, "We've been talking to the unions for years and what we're seeing now is a result of those discussions. The collective bargaining agreements which are already out there don't really fit us, and that's why we can see a need for a tailor-made agreement for our industry."
Andren emphasized the importance of making the gaming industry attractive to employees, stating, "Our industry is hyperglobalised where we're competing alongside studios all over the world. That's why it's important for us to be attractive employers."
Andren highlighted the significance of the gaming industry to Sweden, saying, "The gaming industry must be the biggest cultural export we have in Sweden today. We hire an unbelievable number of people and we need to live up to that."
Andren expressed optimism about the future, saying, "It's going to be really exciting to see the result and of course, we hope we can put an agreement together."
