Google has laid off hundreds of employees from its devices unit, which encompasses teams working on Android, Chrome, and Pixel devices. This follows a voluntary buyout initiative offered to employees earlier this year as part of a strategy to boost efficiency after merging the Platforms and Devices divisions. Executives indicated that these layoffs are part of a broader trend of annual cost-cutting measures, in light of changing economic conditions and earlier pandemic-driven hiring surges. Google aims to become 20% more efficient by reducing staff in managerial roles and other positions.
Hundreds of employees have been laid off from the devices unit, which works across Android software, Pixel smartphones, and the Chrome browser. This follows a voluntary buyout in January where Google offered workers in the Android and Pixel teams a 'guaranteed severance' if they were willing to step away from their jobs.
Since combining the Platforms and Devices teams last year, we've focused on becoming more nimble and operating more effectively, and this included making some job reductions in addition to the voluntary exit program that we offered in January.
