Flying cars are always this close to our Futurama future. Is it time to believe it?

Computer-rendered demonstrations make eVTOLs appear appealing, but startups must move beyond investor-facing demos to demonstrate safe, reliable operations within crowded airspace and meet regulators' standards. Startups must also win paying customers who have cheaper or established transport options, making the business case uncertain. Joby Aviation claims it is months from commercial operations and presented its vision at Web Summit, with executive assurances that the concept is real.
