EU approves Apple plan to open up tap-to-pay to rivals DW 07/11/2024
Briefly

Apple has committed to allow rivals to access the 'tap and go' technology of iPhones. Today's decision makes Apple's commitments binding, competitors will effectively compete with Apple Pay for mobile payments with the iPhone in shops.
The standard technology behind contactless payments will now be available to competitors on Apple phones within the European Economic Area, allowing alternatives to Apple Pay.
Apple had risked a fine of up to a tenth of its worldwide annual turnover, but with the commitments accepted by the EU, they avoid this heavy penalty.
Apple Pay and Apple Wallet will continue to be available in the EEA for users and developers, providing an easy, secure, and private way to pay, according to Apple's statement.
