The U.S. Department of Justice has proposed that Google divest its Chrome browser to remedy alleged antitrust violations. This argument claims that Google used its browser to maintain monopoly power in online search and advertising, paying companies like Apple and Samsung to secure default search positions. A recent opinion by U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta has characterized Google as a monopolist. This legal battle revolves around whether Google's agreements restrict competition and generate excessive profits, with a ruling expected next month.
Google's conduct presents genuine danger to freedom in the marketplace and to robust competition in our economy,” the plaintiffs said in the Friday filing.
The judge has already declared 'Google is a monopolist, and it has acted as one to maintain its monopoly,' in an opinion filed in August 2024.
