Big Sur faces 'uncharted territory' with continued Highway 1 closures
Briefly

"When I see and I hear testimony from people during the Labor Day, during the busiest time during summer weekends, about how exceptionally crowded it has become - people coming down the coast and turning around and coming back - that has increased the congestion," said Magnus Toren, director of the Henry Miller Memorial Library in Big Sur, discussing the good and the bad of the situation. "When the highway is [completely open], 50 percent of that traffic would continue all the way through - so it stands to reason it would increase congestion."
"There definitely is a drop-off," he told SFGATE. "There are so many other variables impacting monthly and weekly sales, but we're probably down 30-35 percent through daily walk-in visitors."
It's a tricky calculus, he said, explaining that the moving target of operating a restaurant on the edge of the continent - no matter how famous it is - is only growing more difficult in time.
