Audi has initiated its Edge Cloud 4 Production (EC4P) project at its Böllinger Höfe plant, incorporating the first virtual programmable logic controller (vPLC) to modernize factory automation. This shift is part of Audi's strategy to reduce costs and environmental impact, while increasing efficiency. Following successful testing since July 2022, EC4P now controls systems for various Audi models. This server solution will ultimately replace older decentralized control systems, optimizing production with greater scalability and a smaller environmental footprint, aided by VMware Cloud Foundation for enhanced integration of IT and operational technology.
The introduction of virtual programmable logic controllers signifies Audi's commitment to enhancing manufacturing efficiency while reducing costs and environmental impacts.
By utilizing VMware Cloud Foundation, Audi is positioning itself to seamlessly integrate IT and operational technology, leading to a more responsive and sustainable manufacturing process.
