"Amazon will cut about 14,000 corporate jobs as the online retail giant ramps up spending on artificial intelligence while cutting costs elsewhere. CEO Andy Jassy, who has aggressively sought to cut costs since becoming CEO in 2021, said in June that he anticipated generative AI would reduce Amazon's corporate workforce in the next few years. CBC News reached out to a spokesperson for Amazon to ask whether any Canadian employees are impacted by the layoffs and did not receive a response."
"Jassy said at the time that Amazon had more than 1,000 generative AI services and applications in progress or built, but that figure was a "small fraction" of what it plans to build. Jassy encouraged employees to get on board with the company's AI plans. Earlier that month, Amazon announced it was planning to invest $10 billion US in building a campus in North Carolina to expand its cloud computing and AI infrastructure."
Amazon will cut about 14,000 corporate jobs as it increases spending on artificial intelligence and reduces costs elsewhere. CEO Andy Jassy said generative AI is expected to reduce Amazon's corporate workforce over the next few years and noted that Amazon already had more than 1,000 generative AI services and applications in progress or built. The company plans major infrastructure investments, including a planned $10 billion campus in North Carolina and roughly $10 billion commitments to data centres in Mississippi, Indiana, Ohio and North Carolina. Amazon faces competition from OpenAI, Google and Microsoft while pursuing massive growth in AWS and is reducing bureaucracy and shifting resources; impacted teams will be notified and most workers will receive time to seek new roles.
