Why hiring veterans makes business sense
Briefly

UK companies are encouraged to hire military veterans based on research from the Office for Veterans' Affairs (OVA). The study shows that businesses employing veterans experience increased resilience, improved problem-solving, and a stronger work ethic. Notably, 91% of employers reported a positive impact from hiring veterans. This emerging talent pool counters stereotypes about service leavers, demonstrating that veterans offer valuable skills and fresh perspectives. Government initiatives like Op Ascend support veterans' transition and help employers effectively integrate these individuals into the workforce, leveraging their unique traits for organizational success.
Companies across the UK are being urged to tap into an often-underutilised talent pool: military veterans. New research from the Office for Veterans' Affairs (OVA) suggests that businesses which employ former service personnel benefit from enhanced team resilience, superior problem-solving skills, and a notably stronger work ethic.
According to a survey conducted on behalf of the OVA, 91 per cent of employers who had hired veterans reported a positive business impact. The findings challenge lingering stereotypes about service leavers, and instead point to a cohort of candidates who are not only highly capable but also bring fresh perspectives to commercial environments.
Colonel Alistair Carns, veterans minister and Royal Marine reservist, said his own service experience has highlighted the exceptional capabilities of former armed forces personnel. 'Hiring veterans means bringing in leadership, resilience, and exceptional problem-solving abilities, along with the kind of personal attributes that help create high-performing teams - qualities like integrity, loyalty and self-discipline.'
