"A lot of other people's dreams were wrapped up in WeWork,"
"I achieved some degree of wealth from WeWork and a lot of other people didn't,"
"A lot of other people who I cared about lost their job. A lot of other people's dreams were wrapped up in WeWork and then they fell apart or they were crushed."
"I felt he had to "correct a lot of those wrongs for people.""
Miguel McKelvey served as WeWork cofounder and chief culture officer and left the company in 2020 after a failed IPO and his cofounder’s ousting. Many employees who had been welcomed into the company later faced layoffs following the failed IPO and a SoftBank bailout. McKelvey said he achieved wealth while many he cared about lost jobs and had dreams tied to the company that were crushed, and he felt compelled to correct those wrongs. Reported culture problems included relationships between bosses and subordinates, alcohol-fueled meetings, and open drug use and sex at retreats, even as some employees experienced supportive cultural conversations and connections at work.
