"This decision marks the beginning of a new chapter for me,"
"I've spent nearly half my life building Sweetgreen, and I'm ready to be a beginner at something again."
"My connection to our mission remains unwavering,"
Nathaniel Ru, co-founder of Sweetgreen, is stepping down as chief brand officer while remaining on the company board and stepping back from day-to-day operations. The company has faced a difficult year, with its NYSE stock losing about 80 percent of its value since the start of the year. Zipporah Allen will take over Ru's responsibilities; she joined in September as chief consumer officer and previously held senior marketing and business roles at Strava, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, and McDonald's. Sweetgreen launched in 2007, expanded rapidly, moved to Los Angeles, went public in 2021, and now operates more than 280 locations. Recent business has slowed amid customer complaints about declining quality and high prices.
