WhatsApp says it has resolved technical problem
Briefly

On Friday afternoon, WhatsApp users faced brief outages, with over 50,000 reports logged by Downdetector. Users primarily struggled to send messages, but WhatsApp confirmed the issue was quickly resolved. Although some Facebook and Messenger users encountered problems, they were fewer in number. WhatsApp, now owned by Meta, boasts nearly three billion users, which magnifies the effects of any technical difficulties. Compared to a major global outage in 2021, the recent issues were less severe, indicating an area of concern for Meta's operations.
Downdetector received more than 50,000 reports from users shortly after 15:30 GMT, indicating a significant outage for WhatsApp. The issues primarily affected users' ability to send messages.
WhatsApp's spokesperson confirmed, 'We know some people briefly had trouble sending messages on WhatsApp,' assuring users that the issue was fixed promptly.
Meta's extensive user base means that even minor glitches can lead to a widespread impact, highlighting the challenges of maintaining performance across its applications.
In a comparison, while recent outages have been inconvenient, they haven't reached the severity of the 2021 incident where WhatsApp and other Meta apps were down for nearly six hours.
