TikTok moderation has pushed some news creators to the limit
"TikTok has officially closed its long-anticipated deal with the U.S., aiming to address government concerns with data security and content moderation. But for many creators, the closure does little to alleviate ongoing frustrations with the platform's algorithm shifts and moderation policies, which, three creators told Digiday, have caused engagement and earnings to fluctuate unpredictably. On Jan. 5, one of TikTok's biggest news-focused content creators, Dylan Page (aka News Daddy), announced that he was temporarily leaving the platform."
"More than half of news influencers on TikTok have accounts on four or more other sites, according to a 2024 study from Pew research. That number may increase significantly as the major TikTok deal has officially closed. It establishes an America-owned venture of the Chinese tech company ByteDance's app, with 80.1% of ownership shared by a consortium of investors that includes private equity group Silver Lake, American tech company Oracle, and MGX, a company started by Abu Dhabi's sovereign wealth fund."
TikTok completed a U.S. deal intended to address data security and content moderation concerns by creating an America-owned venture majority-held by a consortium including Silver Lake, Oracle, and MGX. Many creators still experience unpredictable algorithm shifts and inconsistent moderation that cause dramatic view declines and earnings fluctuations. News-focused creators report increased censorship during critical news cycles; one prominent creator temporarily left after experiencing steep drops in views. More than half of news influencers maintain accounts on four or more other platforms. Continued platform changes to moderation, algorithm, and engagement patterns may drive creators to diversify distribution and revenue sources.
