James Cartwright was sentenced to life imprisonment, with a minimum term of 28 years, for the rape and murder of his ex-fiancee Samantha Mickleburgh. Cartwright invited Mickleburgh to a hotel for his birthday, where he raped and strangled her. He later called police, claiming he found her dead. The post-mortem revealed signs of strangulation and trauma. Although he denied the charges, a jury found him guilty. Further evidence presented during the trial included his obsessive behavior towards her and attempts to stage the scene after the murder.
