"The tragic outcome we were all desperately hoping against has occurred, and no words can measure up to the immensity of the grief her family is going through, stated Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese."
"This is a horrific event and a horrific set of circumstances, and our thoughts remain strongly with the family, said Northern Territory Police Commissioner Martin Dole."
"An angry crowd clashed with police as Lewis was treated in hospital after his arrest, with protesters demanding officers hand over the suspect for punishment."
A 47-year-old man, Jefferson Lewis, has been charged with the murder of five-year-old Kumanjayi Little Baby in Australia's Northern Territory. The girl's death led to protests by around 400 Indigenous people. Lewis, who has a history of physical assault and was recently released from prison, was arrested after being found unconscious. The girl's body was discovered following a search in dense bushland. Police used tear gas to disperse angry crowds demanding justice, resulting in several arrests.
