Swapna Reddy, after volunteering at an immigration detention center, co-founded the Asylum Seeker Advocacy Project. This initiative assists asylum-seekers in understanding and navigating immigration laws. Originally founded to help a single family, it quickly expanded to support many others. Adopting remote legal aid, the Project created a community for geographically isolated asylum-seekers, aiming to provide vital legal representation during a time when such services were often unavailable. The model highlighted the importance of immediate legal support and community connection, especially amidst early skepticism about remote legal work.
"Regardless of how you feel about asylum-seekers, I think it's hard to take issue with the idea that asylum-seekers deserve to know what the laws are and deserve to know how to follow them."
"It's hard to remember, but before the pandemic, the idea of remote work was pretty uncommon, and there was a lot of skepticism that it could be done effectively."
